For the parents of two-year old Mia – local military members doing everything they can to fight for our country’s freedom and their daughter’s life – today was a special day. Thanks to a donation by Chartway Federal Credit Union’s We Promise Foundation and the generosity of the Roc Solid Foundation, Mia’s dream of having her very own pirate-themed play set came true during a surprise unveiling ceremony.
Arriving to the site by limousine, the two-year battling ALL Leukemia was greeted by a red carpet rolled out just for her, and warm applause from We Promise Foundation and Roc Solid volunteers. For the toddler who has bravely battled six months of aggressive treatment, the sight of her pirate ship playhouse gave the little hero some much-needed medicine.
Children like Mia whose immune systems are weakened as a result of their cancer treatment are unable to enjoy the one thing every child dreams of: a chance to play outside, explained John Blum, Chairman of the We Promise Foundation.
“Because Mia is more susceptible to getting sick on a public playground, she simply hasn’t been able to enjoy the gift of play that every child should,” he said. “That’s why we were so excited to be a part of this magical day. Putting a smile on a child’s face is what we’re all about, and that’s exactly what we were able to do for Mia and her heroic family.”
In addition to Mia’s play set, the We Promise Foundation presented Roc Solid with a donation for two more backyard playgrounds for locally-based children with cancer. Since January, Chartway’s Foundation has donated more than $550,000 to help make dreams come true for children facing life-threatening illnesses and over $3 million since 1999.
